I received my first Reiki attunement over fifteen years ago. Since then I have no idea how many hundreds or possibly thousands of hours I have spent with my hands cupped over mine or someone else’s body letting that wonderful healing energy flow through them. Even with all that there are still moments, from time to time, where I don’t feel a huge amount happening in my hands. In this article I am going to talk a little about the reasons why this might be and also why it doesn’t matter. I will explain what can be more helpful to focus on to help you develop and deepen your Reiki practice.

Why don’t we al...

Relaxation – just simple, everyday relaxation — is difficult to achieve or experience in a sustainable way. Our lives are busy. Things happen, and suddenly that hour we had to go to meditate or exercise is taken up with buying a turkey for Thanksgiving, or staying late at work. Reiki is a far more sustainable way to achieve that relaxation people are looking for, and it provides for a deeper level of relaxation too. It is easy to do, takes very little time, and doesn’t pull you away from your daily responsibilities.

It is truly possible to live in our society and rarely, if ever, feel relaxed in a natu...

The importance of relaxation

As I travel through life there are certain beliefs I have abandoned over the years, some I continue to test and remain unsure of and still others that I have become more and more convinced about. One of the latter of these beliefs is that being able to properly and naturally relax is the essence of good health and wellbeing as well as essential for optimising most, or possibly all, of the functions that our human bodies perform. We are bombarded these days with all the ways that stress negatively affects our wellbeing and our health and can lead to many serious illnesses so...

What follows is an excerpt from Understanding Reiki: From Self-care to Energy Medicine by Chyna Honey. This excerpt begins at the start of Chapter Two: Introducing and Explaining Reiki and covers the chapter's introduction and the first section within. May you enjoy it, share it and read the rest of this easy-to-read and even easier-to-enjoy book.

Introduction to Chapter 2: Introducing and Explaining Reiki

Knowledge on any subject is achieved through the combination of two things—satisfying the mind’s need for information and the body’s need for direct experience. Memorizing facts, g...

It’s not uncommon to see Reiki symbols used in advertisements and articles on Reiki websites, but as a student of Reiki, it troubles me to see them displayed, because I'm trying to avoid seeing them as part of my training.

I’m part of a Reiki lineage that advises students to avoid the Reiki symbols until they’ve been attuned to them by their teacher. This practice isn’t meant to be patronizing — that somehow I’m not “good enough” or “experienced enough” to see the symbols. Rather, there’s an entire path of development that my teacher is guiding me through. As my teacher explained, by avoiding the symb...

I used to be a headache sufferer. I wouldn’t get one everyday, but it was often enough that I would from time to time end up at home, after work, massaging my head and taking pain killers until it passed. It wasn’t for many years after I started to examine my habits and routines, that I realized that I was in a constant state of anxiety and tension.  Unknowingly but consistently I was doing things that “begged” headaches on; simple, everyday things like under-drinking water and overdrinking caffeine and soda.

Intent on feeling better I took steps to eliminate the habits that were working against my we...

I had it in the palm of my hands!

By which I mean that many people who have been attuned to Reiki have Reiki in the palms of their hands, but because they are missing some information about how to use it they don’t find it effective and don’t know why. This prevents them from accessing the power of Reiki to help them relax completely.

I hold a regular Reiki circle. The circle is a bit unusual in that I didn’t attune the people who attend, it is more of a drop-in group. So each time someone comes I ask them how they came to be attuned to Reiki and they tell their stories. As they talk I am really aware...

As a Reiki Professional, I usually start at the client’s feet or knees, and I usually work a few inches to a foot or two above their physical body. Why?

My first experience with Reiki involved a person I had just met touching my face. I could smell her hands. It felt awkward to have someone I barely knew putting their hands on my face and hair. That kind of experience is going to be weird for many people, and as much as I gave Reiki the benefit of the doubt, the way the Reiki was delivered in that session did not help me feel relaxed.

Since one of the benefits of Reiki is natural relaxation, in my wor...

“Understanding Reiki” recently fell into my hands and I am so excited by it... It does for Reiki what I have wanted a book to do for years. It is a book I will refer to whilst teaching and wholeheartedly recommend to my students, something I can’t say about any other Reiki book I have come across.

Understanding Reiki somehow manages to be both an easy read, and therefore suitable for those completely new to Reiki, at the same time as being dense with information that will keep experienced Reiki Masters very happy. It has a simplicity that wonderfully mirrors the simplicity of Reiki itself and I know it...

I have been teaching Reiki for over a decade. During that time I have learned much from students and colleagues, collected numerous books and consider myself an active, sophisticated, Reiki Master Teacher. When I read Understanding Reiki: From Self-care to Energy Medicine by Chyna Honey, I didn’t learn something, or confirm something, or enhance something. I changed.  I changed what I understood Reiki to mean for humans and because of that I changed what I do with Reiki personally, as well as how I teach it to others.

The book shaves much off of Reiki that is unnecessary, and in doing so reve...
